Introducing Abstract Fiber Alto: 100% SuperWash Blue Faced Leicester in a 3-ply DK weight yarn. Shiny, very soft, just the right amount of twist. You should see how this yarn takes color! There is something magical about the way the colors smudge together and create new shades in between. Add the sheen, and it’s almost too pretty to sell. Perfect for sweaters, scarves, wrist warmers, just about anything. 4.5 ounces of Alto is nearly 400 yards and only $20. We think you’ll love Alto as much as we do. Find Alto online at AbstractFiber.com.

On the needles: (00:37)

Gigi is one seam away from completing her Frost Flowers Stole. Jasmin is working on the Cabled Raglan Tunic by Cheryl Oberle, with the shaping from the Twist cardigan (by Bonne Marie Burns) overlaid onto it. We talk about the Vanilla Sweater thread in our Ravelry group, and some of our favorite vanilla sweaters include the Incredible Custom-Fit, Neckdown Raglan. We discuss tunics and body shapes. Gigi's Aeolian has made some progress. We mention Rosemary Hill's bead tutorial.

Gigi is knitting a baby hat using the Gull Wing pattern from Chrissy Gardener's Toe-Up! book. Jasmin talks about the Great Sweater Swap of 2010. Jasmin is knitting the Twist Cardigan out of Cascade 220 in color 9411 for Meghan.

Contest: (22:55)

The Head to Toe design contest has been launched. Details can be found in the contest thread. The contest ends 8/31/2010. Prizes include:
Events: (23:29)
- 9/6: Monterey Wool Auction (Here's the link to the Director's Cut episode about selecting fleeces.)- 9/24-26: Oregon Flock and Fiber Festival

Mother Knows Best: (24:06)

We discuss whipping cables into shape, and learning techniques.
We suggest the Lucy Neatby Knitting Gems 3 DVD for cable-specific help.

When Knitting Attacks: (27:38)

Gigi's Frost Flowers Stole hit a snag. Jasmin goes on the hunt for her Leslie Wind cable needle, and it turns up with a project that she really should finish.

Tour de Fleece Update: (31:28)

Gigi has done 6 repeats of the first chart on her Aeolian shawl. Handcyclists, please post to the Team Sasquatch board. Jasmin has spun 10 of the 24 ounces so far, but has suffered some minor equipment failure. Jasmin replaces Miss Kalendar's driveband.

Review (34:46)

This week, we review Magnificent Mittens by Anna Zilboorg. We LOVE this book! (We also mention Knitting for Anarchists.)

Straw into Gold: (42:14)

Jasmin talks about spinning Lincoln. She doesn't like it.

  1. Thanks for the tips girls. I love your podcasts and listen to them more than once to make sure I get everything out of them that I can. You cannot imagine my surprise when you chose my post about problems with cables for your recent podcast. I am knitting the Fireside Cardigan found on Ravelry for my daughter-in-law and am currently knitting the left side for the second time because I was not happy with the tension and the ladders I was getting up the left side of the cable. I have since changed to cabling without a needle which has helped somewhat and I am snugging up on the tension on the last stitch of the cable and the first purl stitch immediately following the cable. Thanks for the hints. I have no local knitting group and I am currently the only person I know who knits in my area. But I have indeed enjoyed a few classes with Lucy Neatby and so I am going to look into purchasing the DVD that you mentioned to see if there is something there that can help me with the problem. I am currently satisfied with the sweater but just know that I could do better and would be happier if I could do better. I will be posting photos of the project on Ravelry in the next day or so. Check it out - I am realmessy on Ravelry. AKA Ann

Thanks again for your comments - they are most appreciated and I will do my best to follow your advice. Keep doing the podcast - I have learned so much from you and I love your chemistry together. And I always take your advice - and Knit More!

  2. Fun podcast! I used to dye the yarns for Anna's Magnificent Mitten kits sold at the XRX market site. My former apprentice, Kelly Eells does it now (TheUniqueSheep.com) and her info on the yarns is included at the end of the book. Don't forget that this new edition also includes some fun sock patterns!
RE: Lincoln. I'm so sorry you had a not-so-happy experience with your Lincoln fleece. Spun without a lot of twist, it makes The Most Excellent yarn for knitting bags to be fulled - they'll be durable, lustrous, etc. Also makes great yarn for outer-wear, fulled slippers, etc. Some Lincoln fleeces are better than others, of course. Lincoln lambswool is incredible. Yes, I'm partial - we raised Lincolns and Lincoln crosses for 15years and had award winning sheep and fleeces back in the day...
